COMMON STATEMENT ON THE US-EU WINE TRADE RELATIONSHIP

The EU and the US wine sectors play a critical role in supporting a vibrant transatlantic trade relationship.  This sector is an essential driving force for many rural economies and for a significant number of medium and small enterprises. 

The undersigned deeply regret that the wine sector, as a notable industry in our two economies is sometimes caught in the crosshairs of unrelated trade disputes, causing economic damage to producers, and putting the millions of jobs that they support at risk.  Consumers are also victims of those trading conflicts, which can lead to higher prices and reduced consumer choice.

We urge the European Union and the US to resolve current trade disputes, to stop any related retaliatory action against wine exports, and to strengthen their bilateral partnership in order to avoid any sanctions against those sectors, including in the context of the current World Trade Organization Large Civil Aircraft Airbus-Boeing disputes. 

As legislators and policy makers on both sides of the Atlantic, we acknowledge the importance and benefits of strengthening this bilateral partnership. Both the U.S. and the EU are each other’s largest export markets, with the total wine trade reaching more than $5.3 billion (€4.5 billion) annually, creating jobs and investment and supporting sustainable agriculture on both sides of the Atlantic.

We ask our governments to further support the economic vitality and diversity of our wine sectors by working to remove all tariffs on wine to achieve a “zero for zero” wine trade environment.

We call on the EU and the US to work expeditiously to remove all tariffs on wine, thereby strengthening our transatlantic relationship and supporting this important, value-added agricultural sector.

DÉCLARATION COMMUNE SUR LES RELATIONS COMMERCIALES ENTRE LES ÉTATS-UNIS ET L'UE EN MATIÈRE DE VIN

Les secteurs vinicoles de l’Union européenne et des États-Unis jouent un rôle crucial dans la vivacité et la dynamique des relations commerciales transatlantiques. Ce secteur est un moteur essentiel pour de nombreuses économies des zones rurales et pour un nombre important de petites et moyennes entreprises.

Les signataires regrettent profondément que le secteur vitivinicole, en tant qu’industrie importante de nos deux économies, soit parfois pris au piège de différends commerciaux non liés au secteur agricole et qui causent des dommages économiques aux producteurs et mettent en péril des millions d’emplois. Les consommateurs sont également victimes de ces conflits commerciaux, qui peuvent mener à des prix plus élevés et à une réduction importante du choix.

Nous demandons à l’Union européenne et aux États-Unis de résoudre urgemment les actuels différends commerciaux, de mettre fin à toute mesure de rétorsion contre les exportations de vin et de renforcer leur partenariat bilatéral afin d’éviter toute sanction contre ces secteurs, y compris dans le contexte du conflit entre Airbus et Boeing au sein de l’Organisation Mondiale du Commerce.

En tant que législateurs et décideurs des deux côtés de l’Atlantique, nous reconnaissons l’importance et les avantages du renforcement de ce partenariat bilatéral. Les États-Unis et l’Union européenne sont les principaux marchés d’exportation l'un de l'autre : le commerce total du vin représente plus de 5,3 milliards de dollars (4,5 milliards d’euros) par an, créé beaucoup d’emplois et d’investissements et soutient l’agriculture durable des deux côtés de l’Atlantique.

Nous demandons à nos gouvernements de soutenir davantage la vitalité économique et la diversité de nos secteurs vinicoles en travaillant à éliminer tous les droits de douane sur le vin afin d’atteindre un environnement commercial « zéro pour zéro ».

Nous appelons l’UE et les États-Unis à travailler rapidement pour supprimer tous les droits de douane sur le vin, en renforçant ainsi notre relation transatlantique et en soutenant ce secteur agricole à valeur ajoutée considérable.
